“ A green lung in a densely urban area.” Sir Gerald Kaufman MP 1930 - 2017

Project Updates 18th November 2015

1. New Playground

A successful application has been made to the Big Lottery, Awards for All, for £10,000 for new playground equipment. This is the first stage in the complete playground refurbishment being planned with Jupiter Play for £90K and fundraiser Martin Proffitt. David Wilson Homes provided £500 towards the new playground equipment

In the meantime volunteers have been refurbishing the playground, painting the railings and play equipment, removing over growing shrubs and tidying up.

2. Green Fingers Gardening Project.

Green Fingers is gearing up for the winter. Now that the growing season is coming to an end we turn our attention to improving and refurbishing the allotment. This winter we are hoping to:

(a) Finish off the building of the poly-tunnel ready for the plastic being installed in spring. Delaying the cover will mean that we can do a better job getting the build right and hopefully work on some of the interior

(b) Begin the conversion of the Shipping Container we have just had delivered as a project centre. We are hoping to fit doors, windows and insulate the interior before cladding to make a use-able cabin

We are looking for help and expertise to assist us in achieving our goals.

3. New Community Garden

The new garden area was created by the Eco-Centre out of waste land. It comprises of raised flower beds and benches with picnic area and a barbeque for public use.

4. Gorton Heritage Trail

A grant of £5,000 has been received for preparing trail maps and leaflets currently being designed in conjunction with Countryscape. Lecterns will also be positioned along the trail. It is planned that the trail will be ready for opening next spring

5. The Volunteer Gardening Programme

This scheme is running in partnership with Seetec welfare-to-work programme to provide work placements in the park. Currently we have three volunteers working on a wide range maintenance projects to improve the looks of the park.

6. New Kick Boxing project for local youths.

An application has been made for £1,250 to Arcon Community Fund to refurbish two rooms in the Aviary so as to allow a new Kick Boxing Club to be started. We are hoping to hear soon if we have been successful so that the club can start next year

7. Foundation Years Nursery

A new extension to the nursery is being built which should be finished for the New Year. This will allow us to provide for the growing demand for places at this successful new venture which has received top ratings from Ofsted.

8. Heroes Wood

This memorial project to remember the fallen of two world wars is well under way with several thousand saplings already planted on the old pitch-and-put course. An Action Group is compiling the memorial role of honour and plans to build a commemorative feature.
